Genuine Basement Tapes 4
Basement Tapes - recorded in 'Big Pink' - the Band's house in West Saugerties, NY
April-October 1967
Bob's Boots Review: Volume four of the unreleased basement tapes is not near the quality of the first couple of discs. Most likely the grounds for exclusion from any type of official release. The tracks here are an eclectic collection that run the gambit from somber to goofy. Throughout all, however, everyone seems to be lose and having a good time. A party atmosphere surrounds some of the tracks. Likely as not, "party favors" helped to influence the feel of some of the Basement recordings.

A Phoenix In April
Genuine Live 1966
Bob's Boots Review: The Sydney show is a raw and powerful soundboard recording. It is surprisingly quite for being an analog recording from such an early show. Dylan is talkative between a few of the first songs of each set in the slow, stoned voice that typified this tour. The first disc contains the acoustic show. The first song cuts in, and the tape speed runs off for a second. The mic windscreen (pop filter) does not work well throughout the show. On Visions Of Johanna, virtually every line has a word that pops. It's not as bad on Fourth Time Around, which contains a momentary feedback. It returns on each "Baby Blue". On the solo of Desolation Row, Dylan plays a series of triplets on the guitar in double time, and blows a slide on the harp to compliment it for a strange effect that probably worked better live than it does on tape. The second disc is the electric set. The music is well mixed, but the vocals completely overpower it. Of course, because of the nature of the harder singing on this set, the pop filter is much more problematic. Dylan introduces Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues with a bizarre faux meaning of the song. The pop filter becomes so ineffective, that on some verses of LeopardSkin PillBox Hat, every word pops The highlight of the electric set is an erie, laid back Ballad Of A Thin Man that makes use of dynamics, and a play between the vocals and organ. All in all, this is a great recording. The sound is bright and full, and as good as the best know tapes.

From Newport to the Ancient Empty Streets in LA
Hollywood Bowl & 2 Newports
I know this is sort of a compilation, but it's only between two years, so I kept it in this section.
Bob's Boots Review: The material: nearly the entire Hollywood Bowl soundboard recording from an all new enhanced tape source. This is by far the best release of the Bowl show. The filler material is great quality as well. Four of the majestic Newport '64 songs juxtaposed to four crunching '65 versions. The studio filler is from acetate. Highly recommended.

A Nightly Ritual
Genuine Live 1966
Bob's Boots Review: If not the best sounding recording, Liverpool is as good a performance of the electric set as you will find on the tour. Perhaps inspired by playing the hometown of the Fab Four, the band is tight and powerful. Dylan's vocals, Robbie's lead guitar playing and Garth's erie B-3 all seem truly inspired. This board tape is of a remarkable effort. The first track was used as a demo of the song by Dwarf music. The second track appeared on a 1966 single, and on the official CBSCD Masterpieces. Dylan starts his now famous mumbling ruse before the introduction of LeopardSkin PillBox Hat, as the blue collar audience becomes a little loud with their heckling. Ballad Of A Thin Man is the highlight of the night. Glasgow is interesting tracks of songs that Bob was working on that were recorded for use in the film Eat The Document. The sound quality is amazing. The Sheffield show is perhaps the best of the tour. The quality is incredible, and the performance can move you to tears. The Gaumont adds a warmth and depth to the overall sound that is lacking at many venues, and Bob pours his heart into every syllable. This set represents some of the finest of the tour and, arguably, the best of this entire collection.

Finjan Club
Finjan Club, Montreal, Quebec July 2, 1962
Bob's Boots Review: The incredible Finjan tape belongs in every collection. Period. This particular CD release is the one to own. Few if any other releases of Finjan can compare to this gem. Some of the other releases have edited out the in between song talking, mistakes, and false starts (which sometimes seem as long as the songs themselves). Nothing is edited here. The CD captures the moment the recorder was turned on and left to run. This has always been a nice quality soundboard recording, but Yellow Dog has brought it to pure perfection. The audience is pin drop quiet. So much so that this could be a studio recording. The tape is so clean that several times you can hear the guitar case snaps etc. when the stage hand opens it to retrieve harmonicas and a capo. Turn up the stereo, and suddenly Dylan is in the room with you.

At The Beeb
Tracks 1-6 First show broadcast June 19, 1965
Tracks 7-12 Second show broadcast June 26, 1965
Bob's Boots Review: The BBC television broadcast recordings are not true 'professional' soundboard recordings. Instead they are home made (recorded via a microphone going into a tape recorder placed in front of the television speaker during the broadcast). The resulting tapes were of only mediocre quality, marred by a high noise level and a thin sound. For this release, however, the label has done an absolutely astonishing job. On close inspection, you're most likely listening to an exemplary remastering of the best currently circulating tape. But at first, I thought I was hearing the long rumored professional soundboard recordings of these shows. Virtually all of the intrusive white noise is gone. The sound is loud, clear, and well defined; but it still sounds natural... not artificially cleaned up with clinical digital clarity. The great performance (now enhanced by this superb quality) sounds better than ever. This is a lovely release from a historical point of view, a wonderful snapshot of 1965, and (at least until such time that those master soundboard tapes turn up) a must-have disc.

Folksinger's Choice
Cynthia Gooding Radio Show, NY March 11, 1962
Bob's Boots: This is a true not-to-be-missed gem. It belongs in every Bob Dylan fan's collection. The recording was made in February 1962. The date of March 11, 1962 is listed on the back cover, though this is most likely a re-broadcast date. The original radio show broadcast could have been as early as February. History is a bit fuzzy here. This long lost radio show is in perfect quality. It is complete with wonderful live-on-the-spot renditions of the above traditional and Dylan songs, as well as fascinating conversation with a young, as yet undiscovered talent. Bob relates, hilariously, the eponymous title of his soon to be released first LP, and so much more. There is conversation in-between each song that is priceless. All in all, one of the best boots ever to emerge.
